The Full Story
My name is Clea and I am the designer and maker here at CleaMadeThis.
Though my background is in architecture and finance, I have a constant need to make things and be creative.
In 2015 I started making jewellery for my friends and family, before offering it on Etsy. I sold a few soutache pieces (organic formations using beads and ribbon). I attended a course at West Dean College learning how to make chainmaille jewellery using sterling silver and gold. I used this technique to add in colourful, hypoallergenic metals like anodised aluminium, niobium and titanium.
It was 3 years in that I decided to learn how to sew. I ended up taking a year off Etsy to make my own clothes, just for me.
And then I had my son right before Covid hit. I crocheted a lot of things for him, like toys, hats, & blankets.
It took me a year or two to get back into making anything for sale - screenprinting came first. I made t-shirts, bags, babygrows with my drawings of plants on them using my Cricut to make the screenprinting stencils.
I then made some fake pasta for my son's play kitchen (his favourite food) and when I put it on Instagram, loads of people wanted some for their kids. They are currently my best sellers on Etsy.
Last autumn, I needed some new cosy knitwear for winter, and ended up purchasing a circular knitting machine. I loved making hats, neckwarmers, ear warmers, & scrunchies for everyone and sold a few through Etsy.
However, I can't sell knitwear in spring or summer, so I had to pivot...to polymer clay, and so far I absolutely love it!! I've been making miniature food charms lately.
